Description:
Welcome to an array of charming landscapes: You will hike across gentle hillsides and lush alpine meadows, where, in early summer, the purple rhododendron and velvety blue gentian are in full bloom – out to the Steirersee, and to the Schwarzensee, a lake whose crystal-clear water and flat shoreline invite you to experience complete refreshment for body, mind and soul. And talking of refreshment: You will also encounter numerous opportunities for refreshments and a bite to eat during this hike as well.

Directions:
You will start from the mountain terminal of the quad chairlift on the Tauplitzalm, following the farm lane through alpine pastures leading to the Steirersee, where you will continue along the northern shoreline – across gentle hillsides and lush alpine meadows that will put an almost imperceptible spring in your step. Tip: Above the Steirersee the Steirersee huts are an inviting spot to stop for a quick break if you are in the mood for a fragrant cup of coffee to begin your hike. Afterwards, you will soon reach the Schwarzensee, which beckons you to take a refreshing dip in summertime. Though if you prefer, you can simply dangle your legs or wiggle your toes in the water instead. Completely invigorated, your hike now continues to the Leistalm, returning along the same route to the Steiersee. This time, keep left and circle the lake along the southern shore. Hike up to the Steirersee huts, then make your way back to the lift terminal in Tauplitzalm village.

Tip:
Be sure to set aside plenty of time for a refreshment break at one of the traditional mountain huts or the restaurant on the »Alm«. Their hearty dishes and homemade pastries are guaranteed to hit the spot.

Equipment:
Out on the alpine pastures and high peaks, the weather is infamous for changing quickly: Whether you are a laid-back “Sunday hiker” or an intrepid summiteer – you will get far more joy out of your outdoors experience if you are prepared for all potential conditions. That’s why we are taking this opportunity to share a few useful tips with you for your mountaineering expedition, hike or stroll in the hills.

Your most important companion up in the mountains is a good rucksack – a capacity of 20 liters is ideal, though bigger is not a bad idea for more extended tours. Your precise equipment needs will vary according to the tour and weather, a decision that’s ultimately up to you alone. But here’s one helpful rule of thumb to go by: Pack as much as necessary, but as little as possible!

  • Professional hiking boots that have been worn in.

  • Special hiking socks for good traction inside your boots.

  • Hiking pants – zip-off legs are great for adjusting to changing temperatures.

  • A change of functional shirts – especially on the summit or after a strenuous stage.

  • Breathable rain jacket within easy reach (packed in the side or top).

  • Rain wrap for your rucksack, also quick and easy to access.

  • A warm sweater and/or warm jacket if temperatures change drastically.

  • Cap and gloves – even in summer, in the mountains it can quickly turn cold.

  • Sun protection: cap and sun block with high SPF.

  • Hiking or trekking poles if appropriate to your tour.

  • 1-2 sandwiches, an energy snack such as a cereal bar won’t hurt either.

  • Drinks bottle with at least 1.5 liters of water, tea or energy drink.

  • Professional hiking map of the area.

  • Mobile phone that is fully charged.

  • First-aid kit and band-aids for blisters.

  • Cash and a pocket knife.

  • Cushion to sit on and enjoy the views in comfort.

We wish you a wonderful time hiking or mountaineering on the Tauplitz!
