Water Adventures in the Salzkammergut – 76 Reasons to Take the Plunge
Attersee-Attergau:
Deep Blue Natural Cinema and UNESCO World Heritage Austria’s largest inland lake, the Attersee, captivates with its turquoise clarity and attracts guests from around the world with ideal sailing and diving conditions. River diving in flowing waters like the Ager or Traun rivers offers an exotic experience. Over the years, the Attersee has established itself as an international diving hotspot with state-of-the-art infrastructure and specialized diving centers. With visibility of up to 30 meters, the lake is particularly popular in winter for dive expeditions, including visits to the UNESCO World Heritage underwater pile dwellings.
Fuschlsee Region:
Nature Enjoyment with Rhythm Crystal-clear, motor-free, and invigorating: Fuschlsee is a place for serenity and sport alike. From the idyllic Hofer Naturbadestrand to the Fuschlseebad with its large sunbathing areas, the region offers ideal conditions for all kinds of water sports. Special experiences include early morning SUP sessions with breakfast on the lake and romantic “Resonating Sunsets,” where brass ensembles perform on the water. From December 2025, the 2026 SUP Safari will offer new perspectives across Fuschlsee, Mondsee, and Attersee - stress-free and fully immersed in nature. Adventurers can also enjoy canyoning tours through the Strubklamm or Almbach for wild, wet, and unforgettable experiences.
Mondsee:
Set Sail & Let Your Soul Float Mondsee uniquely combines sport and tranquility. The largest sailing and windsurfing school in the German-speaking region teaches both beginners and experts the art of the wind. Guided sunset sails aboard the “Gitana” create magical moments on the water. SUP yoga on the socalled Yoga Island offers a meditative experience, with calm morning light, gentle waves, and mindful movement enhancing the serenity.
Wolfgangsee:
Action, Elegance, and Alpine Panorama Whether wakeboarding, surfing, or sailing, Wolfgangsee caters to sports enthusiasts of all kinds. Every Thursday until August 21, the water ski show in Strobl entertains with acrobatics and music. On September 27–28, St. Gilgen hosts the “Legend of Ox” SUP race for participants of all ages. Additionally, the historic UYC Wolfgangsee organizes sailing regattas throughout late summer in a picturesque setting.
Dachstein Salzkammergut:
Crystal-Clear Lakes Hallstättersee and Gosausee rank among Austria’s clearest and most beautiful lakes. In summer, they invite visitors to swim, boat, SUP, or fish. Boat tours on Hallstättersee offer new perspectives on the UNESCO World Heritage town of Hallstatt. The tranquil Gosausee, with its stunning view of the Dachstein massif, is perfect for pure relaxation. The region embodies traditional summer leisure, unspoiled nature, and uncompromising quality.
Traunsee-Almtal:
Deep, Clear, Spectacular Traunsee is Austria’s deepest lake and a hotspot for adventure sports. Riverwave, Europe’s largest artificial standing wave, attracts thrill-seekers. Providers like SALT and TraunXperience offer windfoiling, kiteboarding, SUP, and kayak rentals. The region hosts events such as the Lakeventure Action Days and numerous sailing regattas. On the shore, on the board, or underwater, Traunsee combines activity with mountain panoramas in spectacular fashion.
Bad Ischl:
Water Meets History As the cultural heart of the Salzkammergut, Bad Ischl offers both historic charm and modern water experiences. The family-friendly Parkbad in the city center and the extensive EurothermenResort with sauna and spa provide relaxation in all weather. A refreshing hike to Rettenbachklamm in the Rettenbach wilderness, just half an hour from Bad Ischl, offers cooling relief on hot days.
