Theme trail: Archaeological treasures
In the early Hallstatt period (800 - 600 BC), Traunkirchen was an important centre of the salt trade. Numerous interesting finds from this period - ceramic vessels, weapons and jewellery made of gold and bronze - are on display in various public places, accompanied by informative information boards.
Groups by appointment. Pre-booking by calling +43 (0)676 7851070 or 07617 3466

The supra-regional importance of Traunkirchen in the Late Bronze Age (Urnfield Culture, 10th/9th century) and the Early Iron Age (Hallstatt Culture, 8th/7th century) is evidenced by a wealth of archaeological finds, which reveal close links to the "salt lords" of Hallstatt. The only lakeside settlement of this period in Austria was located on the peninsula on which the former monastery now stands. The burial grounds belonging to this settlement stretched from the monastery to the "Klöd" district. A unique monument to the early settlement and religious history of the Salzkammergut is the Johannesberg, which is the subject of numerous legends. Several stone axes from the Neolithic period (around 3500 BC), which were found on the summit plateau, bear silent witness to the first farmers and cattle breeders, who were present on the mountain and on the peninsula despite the unfavourable agricultural situation for them. Johannesberg reached its historical peak in the Hallstatt period, when a burnt offering site existed on the summit of the limestone rock visible from afar. Here, crops, domestic and wild animals and other essential goods were offered to the gods in the open air. Ceramic artefacts from the Roman imperial period testify to the attraction of this natural sanctuary until late antiquity.
