The Tressenstein Observation Tower near Bad Aussee offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Ausseerland region, the Dachstein massif and the surrounding mountains. It’s a rewarding hiking destination that treats you to spectacular views of the Styrian Salzkammergut.
The Tressensteinwarte on Tressenstein rewards its diligent hikers with a unique 360° view of the surrounding mountains and lakes of Ausseerland up to the Dachstein massif and the mountains of the upper Enns valley. From this popular excursion destination, the Altausseer See with its house mountain Loser, the Grundlsee, and the foothills of the Totes Gebirge as well as the spa town Bad Aussee can be viewed from a lofty height. Significantly less exhausting than the summit ascent to its big brother Trisselwand, the hike is also a real highlight for families.
After the ascent, visitors can enjoy a short break on the multi-story lookout and let themselves be refreshed by a light breeze and the colorful sounds of the surrounding nature. Also on the "Kanzel", an observation platform built near the lookout, small and large adventurers enjoy a dreamlike view over the urban area of Bad Aussee to the impressive Dachstein in the background of the scenery.
The Tour to the Tressensteinwarte is accessible by foot from Bad Aussee, Grundlsee, and Altaussee depending on the desired length & difficulty. From the Grundlsee side, the rewarding panoramic view at the summit can be reached the quickest. Starting from the parking lot Tressensattel in the area of Grundlsee, the approximately 16 meter high lookout can be reached in just under three-quarters of an hour. Equipped with good hiking boots, the short but steep ascent can be well managed. Those who have mastered the shady forest path to the top will be rewarded at the Tressenstein with a unique viewing experience of the highest order.
For biking fans, the Bike & Hike variant to the Tressensteinwarte is worthwhile, which combines hiking and cycling. From Grundlsee, the route leads through the districts of Mosern and Untertressen, ensuring an exploration tour by bike through part of the municipality at the Styrian sea.
Ideally, the tour can be rounded off after the descent with a jump into the cool waters of one of the lakes just admired - whether it is the Grundlsee or the Altausseer See: Refreshing in the crystal clear water makes the day in Ausseerland a perfect experience.
Even Empress Elisabeth, better known as Sisi, explored the area around Grundlsee. On June 23, 1888, she led a tour into the Totes Gebirge, including a hike to the approximately 1,200-meter-high Tressenstein, whose impressive view she could enjoy.
In 1901, the construction of the first, 24-meter-high Tressensteinwarte began, which was completed in 1907. Thanks to the joint commitment of the Alpine Club, the local population, and numerous sponsors, one of the most successful projects of the Ausseer Alpine Club was created.
After the theft of the copper lightning conductor cable and a subsequent lightning strike, the original lookout had to eventually give way. In its place, the current 16-meter-high lookout was opened in 1953.
Its history tells of solidarity and perseverance. Today, the Tressensteinwarte is counted among the popular excursion destinations in Ausseerland and enchants locals as well as guests with a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding mountain world.
Sturdy hiking shoes and enough to drink.
The lookout can be hiked from the towns of Bad Aussee, Altaussee, and Grundlsee, depending on the desired length & difficulty. The starting point for the shortest route is the parking lot Tressensattel in Grundlsee.
Currently, there are no places to stop for a break on the ascent to the Tressenstein. We recommend bringing a small snack and enough drinks in a small backpack.
The hike is also easily doable with a dog on a leash. There is no free-roaming livestock along the path, and the trail primarily runs in the shade. The terrain around the observation tower is steep, so four-legged friends should be secured well. Dog owners should make sure to bring some water for their dog as well.
The hike is suitable for families with children who already have some experience in hiking. We recommend the shortest variant starting from the parking lot Tressensattel. It primarily runs in the shade and provides a real mountain hiking feeling even among the smaller hikers with its short but steep ascent.
Paid parking is available at the parking lot Tressensattel in Grundlsee, as well as in the municipalities of Bad Aussee and Altaussee.
