Everything here is steeped in tradition. The world of the miners in the salt mine remains the same today as it was hundreds of years ago. The fishermen catch their char from the crystal-clear lake, just as their ancestors did. And visitors love Altaussee just as much as the first strangers who arrived in the village well over a hundred years ago and realised that they were not strangers here at all, but felt at home and had reached the destination of their dreams. Altaussee has always enticed creative people – painters, writers and musicians – to stay and return. Anyone who follows their example would be well advised to do so. The landscape envelops its visitors with limestone-white peaks, mountain forests and flower-filled meadows, or, as white expanses heavy with snow, lays a sparkling blue lake at their feet – inviting them to swim in summer, in winter, steaming in the cold or covered in glistening ice at their feet, and constantly offering the eyes new sights.
